Ostomy Terms

Life after ostomy surgery is a journey, with challenges along the way. Here we provide you with some of the explanations of ostomy appliance terminology you may come across.

The first few times you change your urostomy bag on your own, it will almost certainly feel challenging. Make sure that the first couple of times you try emptying or changing the bag, you do it somewhere you feel safe and comfortable.

Take your time – it's completely okay if at first you don't get it right every time. Though it may take some time getting used to, it will soon feel like a routine matter to you.

Getting into a routine

It will be very helpful if you can try to establish a routine for changing your ostomy bag – a good rule of thumb is to change your bag at a time when your stoma is relatively inactive – many find that first thing in the morning is a good time.

How often does the ostomy bag need draining?

Typically urine will drip continuously into the bag so it will need to be drained several times a day. During the night, the urostomy bag can be attached to a larger bedside drainage bag so you don't need to get up and drain it.
